RE: Final Vote on the One Big Beautiful Bill
FAX THE EDGE | FAX-ACE-0420
Senator Collins,
You once stood in the way.
In 2017, when your party tried to kill the Affordable Care Act, you voted no. You defied the pressure. You stood with John McCain. You carved your name into history with a single word: NO.
Now here we are again. Another reckless attempt to gut healthcare. Another top-heavy tax cut written to please a man who cares more about his Fourth of July photo op than the lives he’ll ruin. And another opportunity — maybe your last — to show us who you really are.
You already voted to advance the One Big Beautiful Bill. That vote is done. It’s in the record books, and it’s already being used to claim your support. But you have a chance to correct the narrative. The only thing that matters now is what you do next.
Because no amendment, no rural carveout, no press release full of “grave concerns” will matter if you vote yes on final passage.
This is not moderation. This is not pragmatism. This is a betrayal in 940 pages — and you know it. You said you’re “leaning no.” Then let’s be clear: if you fail to stop this bill now, history won’t remember that you hesitated. It will remember that when it truly counted, you failed to act.
You’re not just voting on policy. You’re voting on people’s lives — in Maine and across this country. Seniors. Veterans. Nurses. Families who already ration insulin and hope. You’re voting on your legacy. And you are dangerously close to handing it away.
John McCain didn’t walk to that floor and give a thumbs down because it was easy. He did it because he knew what would happen if he didn’t. You were there. You remember.
Do it again.
Stand up. Walk to the floor. Give this bill the same answer you gave the repeal vote. NO.
There is no safe vote here. There is no middle ground. There is no “yes, but.”
There is only this moment. And it will define you.
Don’t just furrow your brow. Don’t issue another press release. Don’t disappear into procedure.
Vote no. Make it count. Make it loud. Make it final.
Because if you don’t, we will make sure no one ever forgets who helped push this monstrosity over the line — no matter how concerned you looked while doing it.
We’re watching. We’re organizing. And this time, we’re keeping score.
Sincerely,
Closer to the Edge
