Today is the second anniversary of the October 7 attacks, devastating for Israelis and Palestinians both. The attacks were horrific, but the response by Israel has been beyond any bounds of international law or human decency, wreaking destruction on an entire people, bombing and shooting children, wielding mass starvation as a weapon of war. This last week, on the Day of Atonement, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Israeli forces intercepted in international waters the Global Sumud Flotilla, carrying food and medical supplies to break the siege. They confiscated the needed, life-giving supplies, arrested the peaceful activists and subjected them to cruel and humiliating treatment.
On this sad day, I’m posting a conversation I had in Barcelona back in September with permaculture designer and teacher Alfred Decker, who works with Permaculture for Refugees and teaches with Earth Activist Training and his own organization, 12 Principles Permaculture. We talk about the potential of permaculture to offer support for refugees, and share more about the historical context of the Gaza situation. Alfred speaks about the initiative ‘Permaculture in Palestine,’ and our hope to be able to offer help for healing and regeneration in the region.
We were also joined by Sherry Maurin, who is part of the steering committee for the Gaza Freedom Flotilla. Of course, the situation has evolved rapidly since this conversation was recorded two months ago. And today, the effort to end the slaughter and build hope and justice in the Middle East remains more crucial than ever.
